Spouse visa approval
What Happens After Your Spouse Visa Is Approved?
Approval is a major milestone, but your case is not finished until your spouse travels, enters the United States, and receives the green card.
Approval does not mean every step is complete
After the consular officer approves the spouse visa, the passport is usually returned with the visa inside. Your spouse must still travel during the visa validity period and be admitted at a U.S. port of entry.
1. Review the visa
Check the name, date of birth, passport number, visa category, and expiration date as soon as the passport is returned.
2. Follow delivery steps
Use the embassy, consulate, or visa service center’s passport delivery instructions and keep tracking details available.
3. Plan travel carefully
Do not wait until the last moment. Your spouse must enter the United States before the visa expires.
Before traveling to the U.S.
- Confirm all visa information is correct.
- Keep the passport, visa, and travel documents accessible.
- Carry copies of marriage, birth, police, and financial records.
- Confirm the U.S. mailing address for green card delivery.
- Do not open any sealed immigrant packet unless instructed.
At the port of entry
A Customs and Border Protection officer makes the final admission decision. Once admitted as a spouse immigrant, your spouse becomes a lawful permanent resident.
The physical green card is generally mailed after entry to the U.S. address on file.
