If your spouse was granted Permanent Residence to the USA, because of her or his marriage to you, a US Citizen, and your marriage was less than two years old at the time of applying, then the Green Card that was issued was limited, and marked to expire in two years..
This means the permanent residency granted was only conditional, only good for two years. This is to protect the USA from sham marriage fraud. The expectation is, that if there was no fraud you and your spouse would still be married and a genuine couple, and that your relationship has now passed “the test of time”
Near the end of the 2 years. the couple needs return to USCIS and and once again, demonstrate their marriage is bona fide.
To achieve this the couple submit a petition called “Petition for Removal of Conditions on Residence“.
Once this petition is granted, the spouse’s permanent residency is upgraded from “conditional”, permanent residency to “permanent”, permanent residency.
The fees to accomplish this are as follows:
Once the Removal of Conditions petition has been submitted, about a month later, your spouse is required to go to a USCIS office for fingerprinting and to have an ID photo taken. This is called biometrics.
Removal of Conditions Application Fee: $595
This fee togethe with the biometrics fee, is sent along with your application.
